Falconry displays January 2016.

Well Happy New Year.

The Christmas period in terms of displays went well. We had a new event at Stanbrook Abbey on Christmas Day – thankfully the weather despite the forecast was ok and we were able to provide a full flying display. Our luck with the weather continued for our Boxing Day displays and we finished as always at Thornbury Castle.

Some sad new unfortunately Red our old Harris Hawk passed away during the Christmas period – he was 25 years old. ┬áLast season as I have said in a previous blog apart from being flown at home he was no longer taking part in displays except at Thornbury Castle. He knew the grounds so well and had flown to so many guests over the years that he will be much missed and I cannot pay tribute to him enough. He was a wonderful bird trained partially at Peterborough Show Ground and then in the Autumn of that year we flew him at rabbits on our local hill. He developed wonderful flying powers and fitness on the updrafts something which greatly helped him perform so well in the show environment – circling and coming back to the gloved hand. Later in his career he became the ultimate corporate hawk flying to guests, following on – an active and good natured hawk he will be greatly missed.

Our new Peregrine ‘Sprite’ has now been trained and flown – ┬áhe probably had not been stooped to the lure before as he took him a while to get the hang of it. He clearly has potential and I look forward to his development. He is a lovely falcon and easy to handle and that is a great starting point. I will report back on his progress.

Looking forward to the year ahead we will forge ahead with providing the type of display that I like to offer – strong falcon flying representing the historical association that man has with this fine family of birds of prey along with hawk flying and of course our wonderful eagle owl ‘Bo’ and our Kestrel ‘Pete’ who we hope will be flying at events this year.

I leave you with a picture of ‘Red’.KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA
