October!

The show season is over now and the static display will soon be taken out of the van and stored over winter. I have some long overdue repairs to do on the older canvas weathering – so I will have to dust off my old ‘Singer’ industrial sewing machine – oil it – and get on with it.

All seasons merge into one particularly after 30 years but one remembers notable moments – normally when things go wrong. We have a new falcon to introduce – picture to come. He is another male Lanner falcon or ‘Lanneret’ and we have called him ‘Frank’. He is a second clutch bird and so we got him rather late in the season from a breeder in Bridgewater  – so he is west country falcon!

He is now flying free and for the above reason he is two months or so behind his first clutch contemporaries. It is too early to tell how he will turn out but he is a nice bird and we are hopeful he will develop his own style. He has already been to a couple of shows and sat out on static display in front of people. An early introduction is so useful for the education of a young falcon. Hopefully next season he may fly at a show which would be great. First we have a long autumn and winter ahead of us and it is good husbandry to put a young falcon in an aviary during cold frosty periods with plenty of food. They generally fill during this period while they hardening off – very important for 1st year birds.

‘Pete’ the Kestrel has had a spectacular summer flying as part of the team at virtually every event – he has done so well and I include a great photo of him from ‘Warminster’. Thanks to Malcom Woolf for the brilliant photograph.

We now head into autumn and winter with out hotel and small group work.

Here is the picture of ‘Pete’.
