December

The quiet time that I described in November has come to an end and we are into the festive season with bookings to look forward to. ‘Pete’ our Kestrel really came into his own last summer with some brilliant flying along with showing great versatility. That is where you really get to know a bird. He was rested in a loft aviary to finish moulting at the end of the summer which is now complete and he is ready to fly again. During this period I handled him everyday before feeding to keep him tame which make the step towards flying him again shorter. Which is where we are now. He is such a character I look froward to having him back.

Our other birds are well – we were at an event last week for some American guests at Thornbury Castle – it fits in well there – the guests love it, the castle is authentic and the grounds ideal for falconry – what could be better.

Our Harris hawk  ‘Arizona’ is much appreciated – sweeping down from the trees to land on their outstretched gloved hands. We can show him at his best down there. I sign off with a picture of him trying to catch a bit of food in the air. I do not always do this but it was for the benefit of Paul a local photographer – it is a great photo.
